About the Image(s)

Title: Underwater Photo

This photo was taken a few years ago in December at Sandy Beach on the northeast shore of Oahu, Hawaii. As I have mentioned in the past, most of the sand beach at Sandy Beach is about 10-12 feet above the level of the ocean and the surf often breaks only about 10-20 from the shore, allowing me to shoot down slightly at the body boarders and skim boarders and eliminate the horizon. The waves were in the 8 feet range, and the “all-water” background works well in this photo. I’m able to sit in a beach chair, elbows on the arm rests, with a tripod in front of me. The tripod supports the weight of the camera and lens, but I leave the ball head loose, so that I can easily swivel the lens to the right and left and up and down. It’s really quite comfortable to shoot here.

My camera is a Canon 7D Mark II (1.6 crop sensor), and the lens is the new EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II zoom lens at 227mm. The settings were f:7.1, ISO 400, at 1/2000 sec in bright sunlight, though the body boarder is in the shadow of the wave.

Gerald, really interesting vantage point giving you a real water wall background. The presence of the man under the water with the camera also gives additional peak of action and interest to the image. Very unusual surfing image.   Posted: 11/06/2024 21:55:48
