About the Image(s)

Good morning from Jakarta, it is 9 a.m., Friday, March 27. Spring weather is here for you in the Northern Hemisphere, which means warmer days, and for us in the tropics, it means the end of the rainy season or at least, less rain. However, it seems that the weather is not abiding by the season.
The troubadour
My intent as an image taker is to capture scenes that question the viewer and propose a story. I was walking home from downtown Jakarta, camera hanging down by my side, and nothing was catching my interest.
The cars in the traffic lanes were slowing to stop ahead at the stop sign, and suddenly, from between the bushes and flowers in the street median came this man, a smile on his face and a guitar in his hand, moving into the traffic lanes. He was there for a reason: to play his guitar, smile at the car owners and hopefully collect a couple of coins to help survive the day.
He looked at me and my camera, moving to my face, and smiled broadly (a greeting). This was the time to capture the image, point and shoot, no time to adjust the settings. Just hope that the general setting I use for daylight street photography would do the job. The posted image shows the results after edits.
The background is a department store that has seen better days (it was the place to go to in the late 1980s). That department is changing to a place with local cafes, small restaurants, small shops, and so far, one bookstore ??“ we hope for an art gallery and performance centre. It is not pretentious, it is affordable, one can hear laughing, and sometimes loud conversations.
I was attracted to this scene because it shows the resilience and attitude of someone who may have seen better days, someone who does what needs to be done to survive and hopes for better days. Processed in LR and finished in PS.
Tech stuff: Sony @7rM3; Voigtlander Nokton 40mm, f/7, 1/100; ISO 200

Cisco, you have found an interesting juxta situation of the rich person driving a shiny black BMW while passing the troubadour walking along the edge of the road.
I find your monochrome image a little too constrasty and for that reason I prefer your coloured original image.

Hi, Cisco. nothing to say of your choice to turn into BW, no more no less. but ? would suggest to lighten up to show the midtones and details. you literally cut off the wing   Posted: 04/13/2026 11:56:44

Your coloured image does it for me as the mono one is too "muddied" and not easy on the eye, so to speak. So my personal suggestion is to stick with the coloured version alternatively go with Marevi's recommendation on the mono adjustments.   Posted: 04/14/2026 08:20:52

Thank you for your comments, friends; they are most welcome and appreciated.
I understand your point, and obviously, I "pushed" the image too far. The intent was/is to use contrast to show the differences. The smiling troubador, scrambling to survive, and the anonymous/faceless wealth going by.   Posted: 04/17/2026 23:01:57
