Penguins by Gerhard Geldenhuys

July 2025 - Penguins

About the Image(s)

My submission is of tourists in Cape Town, South Africa, on a viewing platform at a Penguin sanctuary. I used my iPhone 14 Pro Max on a RAW setting and post-processing in Adobe raw and PS cc. No cropping was done.

Interesting activity. We look at the penguins, and they look at us. I wonder what they think. It is a fascinating documentary. I find the colours overpowering, particularly the sky, and that adds to the attraction of the image and story. Well done.   Posted: 07/08/2025 00:27:04

Thank you Cisco. I should tone those colours down a bit.   Posted: 07/13/2025 07:36:26

A nice bright image showing a "gaggle" of tourists all trying to photograph the penguins before their tour guide moves them on to the next destination.
Although the timber walkway creates a leading line towards the penguins, the bright colours of the tourists clothing somewhat overshadows the point of focus which is the penguins.
An interesting photo all the same!

Well... if it weren't for the title of the image, I would never have guessed it was about penguins. My attention was first drawn to the two people in the foreground, then to the hill and sky in the background. I cropped your photo to focus more on the penguins while still including enough people to keep the 'street' feel.   Posted: 07/18/2025 14:36:11

Gerhard, the colors are overwhelming, so I would suggest going b&w with it, and I agree with a tighter crop as mentioned by Tom, but I would leave in more of the platform, which creates a nice leading line, and he jackets in b&w give you some interesting tonal ranges. With b&w you can think of people as vertical lines, like trees.   Posted: 07/18/2025 16:08:23
