About the Image(s)
Within the serene ambiance of a Song Dynasty tea house, or cháliao, the refined elegance of the era is on full display. Moving gracefully through the fragrant haze are ladies whose attire embodies the dynasty's celebrated aesthetic of understated sophistication.
The colors were often soft and muted??”earthy tones of tea-dust green, lavender blue, or smoky brown, made from fine silks and gauzes. This restrained elegance reflected the Neo-Confucian ideals of order and introspection. It was in such graceful, flowing robes that the many educated female writers of the age composed their poetry, their attire a perfect mirror for a culture that valued literary talent and quiet refinement over ostentatious display.
