Great Horned Owl by Craig Callan

July 2024 - Great Horned Owl

About the Image(s)

Taken on a camera club field trip to Homasassa Springs State Park. In addition to beautiful natural spings, this park features a wildlife rescue area, which is home to this owl.
It was a very cloudy day, and this owl had found the darkest corner to hide in. Taken with a Nikon Z50, Tamron f mount 18 - 400mm @ 370mm 1/160 second, f6.3, ISO 3200. In additional to usual Lightroom corrections, I did final processing in OnOne NoNoise AI.

Craig,
I have to admit that I get my best raptor shots at those rescue places. You've got great detail on the owl and his feathers. We can see the eye clearly. Well done. Suggest you crop out the tree trunk on the left and you reduce the tonalty of the green highlights in the upper right.   Posted: 07/15/2024 20:49:00

Hi Craig

He's a handsome devil (or she?). Good balance of ISO/aperture/shutter speed to get as much depth of field as possible, while maintaining a fast enough aperture to not have too high of an ISO. Everything that should be in focus is.

Two thoughts on modifications. There's some kind of dark artifact above the owl's head that needs addressing. Consider removing, or making larger, the item on the left side of the screen. I don't mind the nice border behind him, but the top gets really skinny, which I'm not a fan of.

Thanks

Hi Craig,
I think Josh pretty much nailed the comments I was thinking of making, and as David said I would crop out the tree on the left.
Cheers.   Posted: 07/20/2024 03:03:18

Hi Craig,

The clarity of the texture on the owls feathers is fantastic. He/She just looks so fluffy! I also like how the eyes are clear. I also agree with cropping out the tree on the left, but I like the green of the background on the upper right.   Posted: 07/22/2024 01:00:05

Great photo of the owl - very sharp and crisp. The out of focus greenery in the upper right is a minor distraction, but I agree with the other comments that the slim portion of the tree trunk on the left is a distraction. I'm not sure that you can crop it out without intruding on the owl itself, so I will suggest just the opposite: include more of the tree trunk. It isn't that the tree trunk is there but how narrow and skinny it is. If you don't have it in the original perhaps generative AI, but that violates PSA rules for nature photos.

Thanks for the suggestions, especially regarding the tree trunk. If I had stepped slightly to my left, I would have avoided the problem entirely, but alas, there was another tree next to me!   Posted: 07/26/2024 21:11:00
