August 2026 - Stellar's Jay

Early one morning I noticed a Stellar's Jay sitting on my fence in my backyard so I grabbed my camera and tripod.

I captured this one on my 75-300mm lens at 300mm f/5.6, shutter speed of 1/640 and an ISO of 300. For post production, I cropped shadows out of the fence and increased saturation on the jay slightly.

Great capture! I'm a big fan of taking pictures of the birds in my backyard. We have 4 different feeders, so its easy to get shots of the birds. The bird is very sharp, nicely situated in the frame and nicely saturated. My only suggestions for improvement would be to darken the bright leaves behind the bird and level the fence. Hi,Really liked the blue and grey colors of the feathers of this striking bird and pose.I usually see them foraging on the forest floor and hiding amongst folliage.Like others,I wish there was a better,even lighted background and less hot spots.Good catch light and exposure on this beautiful jay.
