Desert Triangle by David Kepley

March 2025 - Desert Triangle

About the Image(s)

I took this shot on a photo workshop in the badlands of Utah. We happened upon a dry stream bed where the earth was dry and cracked. I thought that the triangle shape made for a good graphic composition. The earth was that reddish orange color, but I thought rendering it in B&W was more effective. What do you think?

Settings: Canon R7 with a 24-70 Tamron lens shot at 63mm, 1/400 sec, f8, ISO 800 on a tripod. I sued the usual sliders in LRC and converted it to B&W with Silver effects pro.

Great, almost abstract, inage. You maintained a perfect contrast level in a difficult subject. My first thought on seeing the image was tree bark.
Since you were using Silver-Efex Pro, did you play with any of the B/w filter options to monkey with the contrast a bit? On an orange red subject, I would try a green filter to see the effect.   Posted: 03/15/2025 08:46:01

I like the monochrome presentation of this subject. My eye keeps going around and around the triangle, almost like it is trapped in the photo. I'm glad this caught your eye and you captured it in a photo.

Hi David

I really like the punchiness of the processing you've done on this - it gives it incredible detail, and in addition to the triangles continually leading my eye around the image, those details keep making me want to stop and check them out. The darkness you've preserved in the two big cracks works well too - adds a bit of a sense of mystery. I've got nothing to offer-up for suggestions on this image either, really nice work!

Thanks
