Heron Lift-Off by Craig Callan

March 2025 - Heron Lift-Off

About the Image(s)

Shot on a PSA Central Florida Chapter field trip in the Orlando Wetlands. This is the first really satisfying picture I've shot of a bird in flight. I think this shows the rapid focusing abilities of the Nikon Z 7ii I bought last summer Shot in late afternoon, at the beginning of the Golden Hour.
Technical: Nikon Z 7ii, 150-600mm Nikon Zoom @ 230mm, !/1999sec, F 13, ISO 3200
Post Processing: color adjustment in LR, Topaz DeNoise AI

This is a great action shot gathering the viewer's attention. The heron is just taking off, feet still dragging in the water. The reflection adds to the photo. If there is one thing that stands out in this photo, for me it is how the subject stands out from the background.

Well done and thanks for sharing.   Posted: 03/15/2025 10:49:36

Thank you. It was my first outing with my recently purchased Z 7ii, and I was hoping that focusing would be faster. Seems like my expectations were not in vain.   Posted: 03/15/2025 19:40:56

Hi Craig

Cool shot! I like your choice of the deeper depth of field you get w/f/13 - it really provides a great level of detail for the bird as a whole. It's fortunate he's taking off into the sun, and you're spot on about the sharpness, that nice glowing eye is as clear as can be. The symmetry is awesome too. Nothing's jumping out at me for a suggestion.

Thanks
Josh
