About the Image(s)
Description: I just returned from a PSA Central Florida Chapter Field Trip to the Orlando Wetlands an the Merritt Island NWR. At the Orlando Wetlands, I spotted this Heron strutting his stuff in a canal. I especially like the late afternoon light and the definition it gives to the feathers. This was my firsst outing with my Nikon Z7-II and the Nikon 180-600 mm zoom. and the quick focus it gave me.
Technical: Nikon Z7-II, Nikon 180-600mm f5/6-6.3 lens,1/2000th second, f/13 IS0 3200 LR Noise reduction, Masking used to correct shadow areas.

Hi Craig
Great color and detail on this handsome fellow - the complimentary blue and yellow colors work wonderfully. The f/13 provides a nice wide depth of field too, keeping most of the bird in focus.
From an exposure standpoint, it's a bit dark and could be pushed to include some of the whites, it would definitely drive impact. Not sure what kind of real estate you have on the raw file, but it feels like with the tip of the tail being trimmed off, the composition should either be moved to the right, to include the tail, and to the left a bit, to give the beak a little room, or if you're wanting a tighter focus on the bird's wings and head, consider pulling the drop in from the right a bit.   Posted: 02/17/2025 14:45:48

I agree with Josh. So glad you used 1/2000 sec. It did a great job in freezing the actio! The wings are sharp. Great job. Like Josh I woukd like to see the tail and the legs. You coukd however crop it down to the head and wing feathers.   Posted: 02/17/2025 15:31:17

The low in the sky lighting gives a very nice back lighting effect on the tail and the tops of the wings. This does cause the underbelly to be dark. Excellent detail, sharpness in the wings. The eye is tack sharp. Well done.   Posted: 02/18/2025 17:10:24
