Sunset by Josh Lohff

February 2025 - Sunset

About the Image(s)

EQUIPMENT & EXIF
Canon R5 / EF 24-70 f/2.8L II USM & 1/125 sec @ f/2.8, ISO 800, 24 mm (shot free-hand)

IMAGE DESCRIPTION & INTENDED EFFECT
I captured this image at the Disney California Adventure Park during a recent family vacation. It was a beautiful sunset and I thought all of the colors and shapes of the park added an interesting balance to that.

POST PROCESSING STEPS
I did very little to this in post, dropped highlights a bit, bumped shadows a bit and added just a hint of a vignette.

There is so much going on in this picture, but it seems connected enough to keep the image from being too busy. It especially interesting that although the sky is too light to hold much color, then sunset hues in the reflections are vivid. Please make me a reservation for the restaurant on the left, table for two, in the corner by the water.   Posted: 02/10/2025 15:33:30

*chuckle* hey Craig - thanks for the feedback, it's definitely a busy one! That seems to the be the way of Disney though, man there' a lot going on down there. Your request would be a good one - all those little spouts in the water support the water / light / laser show they do each night. We had seats on the pier to the right, it was quite the show!   Posted: 02/17/2025 14:58:53

Josh, you captured a busy scene at a great time of day! I was surprised that you shot this wide open at f2.8. I looked in vain for a lack of sharpness, but only found it on the right side. I woukd have shot this at say f11 or f16. To me the most interesting part of the scene was the left side. To me the subject is the Ferris wheel. You have some nice leading lines leading the eye to the Ferris wheel. You also have a reflection of the shell. So I would crop off the left side just to the left of that large building on the right.   Posted: 02/17/2025 16:34:00

Good catch David, I could have safely bumped that aperture in hindsight. With this older EF lens that doesn't have stabilization, plus no tripod, I was shooting it wide open with relatively low shutter speed to keep the ISO noise in check.

I struggled w/the crop on this one - there's just so much interest in the image, combined w/wanting to share it all, sometimes knowing what to cut out can be tough.

Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it!   Posted: 02/17/2025 16:52:38

A rather busy photo, but my eye immediately goes to Mickey and is not distracted by the busyness. I'm not quite sure that I understand David's suggested crop. Cropping in from the right would remove some of the busyness, but does the "wall" act as leading line? Does it point to Mickey? Cropping would remove the bright distracting ride on the right side of the photo. But it does add to the environment. It seems like a tossup to me. Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 02/18/2025 17:26:10

Hi Alan, I thought it was just me... I didn't follow the crop feedback either. It is busy, but I also felt like that lit-up ride on the right balanced the lit-up rollercoaster on the left. I guess we can all agree, it's a LOT ;)

Thanks for chiming in!   Posted: 02/19/2025 02:04:32
