Cinque Terre by David Kepley

November 2024 - Cinque Terre

About the Image(s)

My wife and I took a trip to Italy earlier this year. We visited all of the 5 villages of Cinque Terre. This is a shot of one of them. I was dealing with mid day full light.

Sny RX-100, 9mm, 1/100 sec, f11, ISO 250. I used the usual sliders in LRC and I expanded the canvas in PS. I thought the bottom was a little too tight.

Hi David

Midday light can certainly be a challenge to capture in, but if you wouldn't have mentioned it, I wouldn't have noticed - nicely done!

I like the busyness you've captured here, from the colors and endless interactions of the different lines and windows of the building to the people, boats, and everything else. Depending on your intent for this image, you could consider cropping the left side in a bit, to keep the viewer's eye focused on the busyness, but that depends on your intent, and I could certainly see an argument that the space on the left, balances that stretch of building on the right.

Josh, thanks for your feedback. I debated whether to crop some off the left, but decided that I wanted to keep the line of the warf going down to the lower left and the cliff coming down on the other side of the red building. What do others think?   Posted: 11/18/2024 16:38:41

The photo is rather busy, but it is this business and all the colors (especially the red building) that make this photo. I don't think I would crop the left side. As it is, it shows that the village is right on the water's edge. What is at the top right corner? Is this a railing?

Thanks Alan. Yep the top right corner is a railing. Time to get out the clone stamp!   Posted: 11/21/2024 15:17:22

I have been making good use of the Remove tool in Lightroom Classic. I check "Use generative AI" and "Detect objects". It usually does a very good job and is quite easy to use.   Posted: 11/21/2024 15:45:46

Wow! The colors are so vibrant, and also the way the town nestles into the cliffs. Excellent work. And yes, lose the railing.   Posted: 11/22/2024 01:06:10
