About the Image(s)

Here is â¬The Secret behind the Windowâ¬. I was walking round an old industrial complex that has been turned into small shops, restaurants and artisan workshops, with our photo clubs monthly theme â¬rhythm⬠in mind. I was charmed by this window that seemed to show a peek into a totally different world behind the stark brick walls. Fuji X-T4, 137.2 mm, f/11, ISO 800, 1/900 s, DXO Pure Raw. I quite like the color version but thought that the forms and textures might come out better in monochrome. I turned it into black-and-white and added a blue toning in NIK Silver Efex. What do you think?

Hi Kirsti - I love the monochrome conversion with the blue toning. This is an image that makes you try to imagine what's going on with the lamps/lanterns/decorations in the window. If I were to make a suggestion of something to try it would be to simplify the image. You could crop down to just below the thick black line towards the top and crop in one window from the right. Then remove the all of the plant (and its pot) and the small white object in the lower right window. These edits may not fit your vision of the scene but are just offered as a different view. Very well seen and processed!   Posted: 07/08/2024 20:19:30

Thank you very much, Jeff! Looks good! It becomes a little bit different story, but definitely a better image!   Posted: 07/08/2024 21:11:42

Hi Kirsti,
I really like the creative feel of the photo. I was going to recommend removing the bright white object in the lower right window. I like Jeff's crop suggestion; I like the plant in the photo but both versions work. Very interesting photo!   Posted: 07/12/2024 03:23:31

Thank you, Robert! I think that the story changes with how much of the interior gets revealed. I think that you are right about the little bright spot - I kept removing and putting it back, but it probably draws too much attention.   Posted: 07/12/2024 19:23:06

The bright spot doesn't (in my opinion) detract from anything. It is another question==what is it? I do think that trhe two black windows on the left do detract fromthe interior   Posted: 07/24/2024 17:31:37

Thank you, Al! I quite like the mystical interior world myself, too!   Posted: 07/28/2024 07:54:33

Hi Kristi, the thought of the blue toning was, to my eye, a good one. I think both versions work well,
Neither the plant nor the light bother me. As you said, they simply change the story. In fact as I see the image they add to it because without them it becomes largely blank squares apart from the windows with the balls in them. The bricks give the image a sense of context as I see it.
I wonder, given the bricks might a red tone instead of blue have worked? I thought I would try it to see what you thought. I also brought out a little of the interior so the windows were not simply black squares.   Posted: 07/27/2024 01:22:02

Thank you, Ed - that is a lovely idea, and again, I think, modifies the story!   Posted: 07/28/2024 07:50:44
