About the Image(s)
The remains of an old pier along the sound side of Hatteras Island, photographed across the winter marsh on a cold, blustery afternoon.
I wanted to capture the starkness of the scene and the sense of isolation ??”the deteriorating pier against a gray winter sky and choppy water. I placed the pier along the horizon and used the darker marsh grass as a strong foreground. The wind-bent grasses also add a subtle sense of movement to an otherwise still scene.
I converted the image to black and white to remove the muted color and emphasize the shapes, textures and repeating structure of the pier. In post, I cropped some and then in Camera Raw, I worked with the tonal range to maintain detail in the dark grasses and stormy sky while allowing the water and distant horizon to remain lighter, helping separate the pier from its surroundings.
Looking forward to this groups thoughts on whether I captured the mood.

I think you definitely captured the mood. I particulary think the missing parts of the pier add to the feeling of isolation and decay. Some of the grass in the foreground might be toned down a bit, I find my eye darting to those brighter grasses. I also like Barbara's suggestion for cropping but both work well.
A very moody picture for sure.

I like this image and the concept behind it. Capturing the deterioration of the walkway is a way to preserve what may be completely gone with another severe storm. This, to my mind, creates a link to the past. That is one way we, as photographers, can help people to remember so the past is not lost.
While, to my eye, it is a perfectly good stand alone as it is, and in agreement with Barbara, you might want to consider making this into a panorama for competition or simply to hand on a wall as I believe the panorama would highlight the deterioration still further making for a more dynamic image.
A very nice image Shari - thanks very much for sharing it with us.   Posted: 08/13/2026 16:47:13
