Robert Cordivari - Ferry from Essex NY to ChFarlotte VT by Robert Cordivari

July 2026 - Robert Cordivari - Ferry from Essex NY to ChFarlotte VT

About the Image(s)

A common sight for me over the past 40+ years - I shot this one rather quickly but was happy with the way it turned out. I would have zoomed in further to make the ferry more prominent, but I wanted to include the modern art sculpture that is only on display through this summer.

Hi Robert, this reminds me of summers on Lake Champlain, a favorite place for my dad and grandparents. It feels like you have several little stories going on with the ferry, the clouds in the distance and the sculpture. You also have a great range in tones and textures. I appreciate the sculpture, but wonder if it is getting lost in this composition? There are also some ghosts in the upper left of the sky that are coming through.   Posted: 07/02/2026 15:32:16

Thank you, Shari, and welcome to the group!
I appreciate your feedback - I'll clean up the ghosts.
I probably could have used a better vantage point to show the entire base of the sculpture.

What part of the lake are you familiar with?

Hi Robert, you are so lucky to have this kind of scenery around you! I like the composition, with the ferry as the centerpiece, the misty mountains in the horizon, old and modern things on the shore in the front, and the vast sky above everything. The arch of the sculpture makes a frame for the scene and, I feel, closes it to show a perfect serene moment.   Posted: 07/06/2026 13:01:19

Thanks, Kirsti!
There are parts of the photo that could have been improved whem I took it, but overall I am pleased with the outcome. Thanks for your comments, and yes, I am very fortunate to visit this place each year!   Posted: 07/06/2026 23:31:20

Hi Robert. Such a beautiful location to photograph and visit often. Glad you were able to enjoy it and photograph the area. I really like the sky and low-lying clouds, along with the ferry in the distance. I do struggle a bit to identify the main subject. There are several interesting elements - the ferry, sculpture, mountain, clouds, and more..but they seem to compete for my attention rather than work together around a single focal point. This may be one of those scenes that could be made into more than one photograph. I think each element has its own strength and could stand on its own as a separate photo. I also notice some artifact in the sky on the left edge and upper center..possibly from cloning?   Posted: 07/07/2026 14:45:34

Thanks, Barbara. I see that now as others have pointed out also. I will try again to focus in more on a subject that holds the attention.

Your comments are much appreciated.

Robert,
I felt this was more about the sculpture than the ferry. My eye immediately saw that first vs the ferry. I felt alittle confused as I saw three subjects, the sculpture, the ferry and the mountains/clouds. It does give the image depth. I like that the tree on the opposite side helps balance the image with the sculpture. I also connect the sculpture to the ferry, where the sculpture is like a sail.   Posted: 07/07/2026 18:41:44

Thanks for your comments, Ray.
I see from your and others comments that there is probably too much going on in the photo. I really saw it more as a snapshot in time. I'll have plenty of opportunities to try again.

Thanks for your comments.

Hi Robert,

I like your concept, especially the way you framed the ferry. Both the sky and the mountains add to that framing supported by the bushes on both sides. I also like that the foreground is light enough but does not demand my attention bringing my focus to the ferry.

The mechanical arm does not, to my eye, add to the image rather it tends to take my eye away from the ferry. I would also suggest a tighter crop to bring the framing of the ferry more prominent.

All in all a very nice image with a very good concept. Thank you for sharing it with us.   Posted: 07/11/2026 23:39:53

Thanks, Ed. I tried to have it both ways in this photo but it seems I have to choose to identify the subject better.
Thanks for your feedback.
