July 2026 - Steve Cole - Majestic One

About the Image(s)

During one of my many visits to the Theordore Roosevelt National Park I came upon this big handsome Bison standing alone on the hill. I knew from the moment of the shutter click this had to be converted to monochrome.
Fujifilm XT2, 100-400 at 400mm (600mm Full Frame), f5.6, ISO 250. Processed in Lightroom Classic basic sliders & Nik Silver Pro Efex

Hi Steve - this is an iconic view of a Bison, and I really like what you did here. The composition is very well balanced. It's an almost panorama feel, although you could maybe crop just a little off the right and not lose the effect.

Monochrome brings out all of the details and textures of sky, grass and shaggy spring shedding. I also like how the markings have isolated his eye, which can sometimes get lost in the shaggy head on these beasts.   Posted: 07/02/2026 14:48:19

Hi Steve, a fine minimalistic image with a perfect title! The lonely beast grazing against the background of the wide sky brings a sense of the vast prairies that I think the composition and the format amplify.   Posted: 07/07/2026 05:48:01

Hi Steve. Very nice capture of a lone bison. The drama and uncertainty in the stormy clouds go well with the subject - it reinforces the bison's sense of toughness, resilience and unpredictability. The placement of the bison gives the left side of the frame more weight. As Shari suggested, a slight crop from the right could help to strengthen the overall balance. I do notice a nice catchlight in the eye though the head appears a bit dark. Possibly lifting the blacks and shadows slightly may help bring out more detail and make the eye pop out more.   Posted: 07/07/2026 18:38:58

Steve,
This image give me a feeling of power and also one of solitude. The dramatic sky helps with an emotional connection. Everything gives me that the subject is the bison, no question. I also like that the textures are present: the shaggy fur, the smooth sky and the rough ground.   Posted: 07/07/2026 18:45:18

Hi Steve
Another wonderful photo! I too like the composition; while I agree with the others that perhaps a small crop wouldn't hurt the photo, I think the small mound and the dark cloud to the right help balance out the photo so I think it works either way.The detail on the animal's fur is amazing. Makes me want to go back out west and see these magnificent creatures again!

Thanks
Rob

Hi Steve,

An apt name - "Majestic One". A couple of things work well to my eye. First the simplicity of the image - everything supports the subject of the image.

I also like your presentation of the sky and the foreground - light enough to make out details without taking away from the subject. All in all, to my eye, well processed with a an effective contrast level.

As I studied the image I came up with some suggestions so I made some adjustments in Photoshop and would appreciate your thoughts on the changes. Two things I did is to flip the imager horizontally so the observer's eye travels to the Bison's face not away from it. Also I lightened the Bison's eye so it stands out a bit ehancing the Bison's face.   Posted: 07/11/2026 23:58:17
