Lake Superior shoreline neat Grand Marais, MN was getting winds in September which normally are attributed to the “Gales of November” timeline. I climbed up on a large rock formation attempting not to slip into the lake along with not getting wet via the waves spray. I was successful with the former but not the latter. ;). Printed (15x10) and framed in black metal frame 20x16 for local art exhibit and was sold at the opening reception. Plus it is also part of my monochrome 7x5 note card collection.
Handheld Fujifilm XT5, 200-400 at 100mm (150FF), 1/250, f8, ISO 125; Processed raw file to monochrome in Light Room Classic utilizing the Basic Sliders.

Hi Steve,
Welcome to the group and what a great introduction we get to you with such a wonderful photo. I don't have any constructive comments - the photo seems to work very well as is. I'm curious though as to how many shots you took before you had to vacate the rocks??
I look forward to more of your photos,

Robert, I believe it was two low-brusts (about 4 images each burst) for I was tying to get a water splash on the rocks in the background. My shoes and jeans got a bit wet but camera/lens did not. :). Thanks for your comments.   Posted: 04/13/2026 00:09:46

Hi Steve, and welcome to the group! No wonder that the image found a new owner immediately. Your risky vantage point makes the force of the storm palpable as the waves seem to flow out of the frame and over the viewer.   Posted: 04/12/2026 20:49:17

Good evening Steve - I also welcome you to the group.
I have always loved the ocean - felt very much at home on the open sea during my sea duty with the Navy. I had heard of the winds on the Great Lakes - now I see it. A great "sea' scape.
I cannot imagine anything that would make the image any better. Very well done sir, well done indeed.
Thank you for sharing it with us, and again welcome to the group Seve.   Posted: 04/12/2026 21:51:53

Ed, I never much on the either coast but the Great Lakes especially Lake Superior can be magical, beautiful, and dangerous all at the same time. Thanks for your comments.   Posted: 04/13/2026 00:13:10

Hi Steve - welcome to the group! This is a strong image showing the energy of the waves. The conversion to B/W works well and adds drama to the scene. There's a nice variation of light and dark throughout the frame. Compositionally, I always look for balance within an image. Although the upper right rocks and trees add some weight I think the land in the distance helps to balance it. My only thought would be to see if creating more tonal variation in the clouds would make the image more impactful.   Posted: 04/16/2026 00:06:43
