About the Image(s)
I live near an old, historic estate with gardens open to the public. Consequently, it’s a very popular spot for weddings, prom photos, engagements, etc. I was taking photos of flowers one afternoon and notice this family and what I’m guessing might be a quinceaƱera. I liked the idea of a photo within a photo and also found the conversion to monochrome dramatic since it completely neutralizes the rather bright and dominant color of the dress. I found that I could concentrate on the facial expressions and posture more easily.

Hi Douglas - I think the conversion to black and white really improved the impact of this image. The b&w version just seems more timeless and dramatic. That dress is something else! The image is further enhanced by your choice of depth of field, which really isolates the subject. When I look at the image I find myself wanting to see all of the photographer on the right or none of the photographer. I think having all the photographer would be great and add to the storytelling element of this shot. However, without him, the image would still communicate the rite of passage identified in the title.   Posted: 05/07/2025 23:51:40
Hi Douglas, you certainly were at the right spot at the right time! I think that you have captured so beautifully the mood of a moment that is both solemn and joyous. - I agree with Jeff about the photographer: he would have added a lovely angle to the story, if only a bit more of him had been included in the frame. I can see the image of just the two girls, maybe with a slight vignette - that might actually be close to what the primary photographer had in mind.   Posted: 05/11/2025 06:47:00
Hi Douglas. What a lucky photographer to photograph this event. I really love the blue color of the dress, but for this particular angle, the black and white conversion is much more effective. I like softer tonal range as it gives the image a more gentle and flattering feel. As the others pointed out, including the photographer fully within the frame would strengthen the narrative especially since the subject's face is turned toward him or her.   Posted: 05/11/2025 14:18:26
Hi Douglas,
I like the idea of a photo of a photo event. I think including all of the photographer would help but if you don't have him in the original it still works as is.
What did you use for softening the background?
I like the exposure and the facial expressions a lot.
Nicely done!
