About the Image(s)
took it with a Sony A7 during a recent hike on a perfectly overcast day! My friends and I were taking a water break and had placed our hiking poles on an old fence post. I liked the symmetry and converging angles.
Details:

Hi Douglas - welcome to the group!
This is a very nice spontaneous photo. Was this taken in Delaware?
I like the composition a lot. It tells the story that you shared - that of hikers taking a rest.
My only suggestion would be perhaps tone down the background in order for the poles to stand out more.
I look forward to seeing more of your photos!

Thank you! I'll try your suggestion about the background -- and appreciate your wisdom!   Posted: 04/12/2025 16:53:21
Ah, hiking - my favorite pastime! And welcome! I like the idea behind this image and how the subject is composed. The use of 3 poles and their placement is effective. I'm curious whether your intention was to isolate the subject, as the foreground log appears slightly blurred. For me, I prefer having a bit more focus in the foreground to add depth and naturally guide my eye toward the subject. The texture in the other logs is captured well. The background is nicely blurred, which draws attention to the poles. As Robert mentioned, reducing the overall brightness in the background could help to keep the focus on the poles.   Posted: 04/16/2025 14:02:19
Hi Barbara - and great call on the blurred front post. I might go back in LR and alter the field. I'd like the forefront to be clearer. Thank you for pointing it out!   Posted: 04/18/2025 20:16:21
Hi Douglas and welcome to the group. I think this image is a great story-telling shot. I like your use of depth of field to isolate the subject. I'll echo Barbara's comment about the post in front being in focus. I don't know that the background needs to be less bright. I think the contrast between the poles and the background, helps the subject stand out. Nice capture!   Posted: 04/16/2025 20:37:51

Hi Douglas, and welcome! I like the image and the story, too! There is a casual feel in the placement of the poles, like the weary hikers just dropped them from their hands. - My eye keeps returning to the three dark tree trunks that are prominent against the brightest part of the sky in the left side of the image. I think that they are nice elements as such, mirroring the angles of the poles and the posts, but I wonder if it would be possible to reduce the contrast in that area a bit? That would also help to bring out the subject?   Posted: 04/17/2025 16:34:28
I really hadn't paid enough attention to trees in the background - and I think you're right - they be reduced if not eliminated. Thanks for pointing them out!   Posted: 04/18/2025 20:34:33
