About the Image(s)
Notes: I always liked the abstract nature of the original, taken years ago, but didn't think about the possibility of converting it to B&W until a few days ago.
I've included the original.
Let me know what you think.

Hi Robert, I think that the high-contrast B&W really brings out the abstract quality of the image. - It may have lost some of the sense of depth of the original, but the lovely illusion of movement may even be accentuated. I think that the conversion definitely was a great idea.   Posted: 04/09/2025 13:53:16
Thanks, Kirsti and Jeff!
I agree with you both. The B&W image gets flattened. I saw that immediately. I think I can fool around with it some more to bring out more depth.   Posted: 04/10/2025 19:04:16

Hi Robert - I saw jellyfish recently and took photos but nothing that came out as good as this! For me this is a storytelling image as I look at all those tentacles and wonder if these creatures ever get tangled together. I do prefer the original in this instance. Specifically, I like that more of the detail of the tentacles can be seen in the original and to my eye, those add a great deal to the photo's impact. Perhaps, using a linear gradient to lighten the top half of the image a bit in the B&W would let those details show through. Regardless, what a great capture!   Posted: 04/10/2025 15:58:21

Hi Robert -- I'm intrigued by the ethereal nature of the B&W despite losing some dimension. The composition comes through more strongly for me with the strong vertical lines crossed by the diagonals. I guess it's the geometry that adds so much attraction.

Thanks, Douglas, it was the geometrical shapes and abstract nature that led me to convert to B&W.   Posted: 04/16/2025 23:29:40
Hi Robert. I'm not sure whether the image was photographed through aquarium glass or using underwater photography, but either way, the image captures the graceful movements and delicate tentacles nicely. I like the stark black and white contrast which works well for abstract interpretation - emphasis on lines and shapes. However from a naturalist perspective, the original better reveals the jellyfish's intricate nature. I like them both.   Posted: 04/16/2025 14:20:56
Thanks, Barbara. I like the color version much better but had fun converting to B&W. It was shot through the aquarium glass, and I was surprised how well it turned out.   Posted: 04/16/2025 23:31:04
