About the Image(s)
This image was taken at our camera club meeting venue that had a fully decorated Christmas tree. I took this image with a Nikon Zf camera and a converted, vintage Helios 44-2 lens (58mm f/2.0). The lens was made in the USSR in the 1970/80s. I recently converted it and have been having a blast playing with it. By "converted" I mean disassembling the lens and reversing the front lens element. I learned how to do this by watching several Youtube videos. The crazy effect is quite unique.

I think the square crop has worked well by bringing the blue decoration into the centre and making the whole image more symmetrical. The contrast between the blues and yellows is attractive. Maybe a little more detail in the dark areas would be an improvement. I congratulate you on modifying the old lens, I wouldn't have the courage.   Posted: 01/02/2025 13:12:15

Thanks, Robert. I'll see what I can about bringing out some detail in the shadow areas. This old, Russian Helios 44-2 lens was relatively inexpensive and quite well used. I didn't use it much either. So I wasn't too worried if I messed up.   Posted: 01/02/2025 13:20:06

pretty inspired retro a old 44-2 lens, I've to add it to my reading list. What the most compelling attractions for you, to this thing?   Posted: 01/03/2025 03:11:33

The main feature of the unmodified Helios 44-2 lens is its swirly bokeh. The lens is a copy of the Carl Zeiss Biotar 58mm f/2 lens which was also noted for its swirly bokeh, but was much more expensive. By reversing the front element, the bokeh gets even crazier as you can see.   Posted: 01/03/2025 10:55:44

Very creative and inventive of you! This really works for me. Love the colors, lighting, composition and the softness. Hope you consider using this for your Christmas card next year. Nice job!   Posted: 01/04/2025 17:12:56

Thank you, Cindy! I will say that the images generated using this lens is not to everyone's taste. It is also difficult finding the right subject to shoot with this lens. Lots of trial and error.   Posted: 01/04/2025 22:41:14
