Falling Down by Don Poulton

July 2024 - Falling Down

About the Image(s)

This is another in the series of old barns I photographed in spring 2023 in northeastern Tennessee. Falling down and ready to collapse at any time. I bracketed the usual 3 shots and processed then in HDR Efex Pro, using a Grunge preset to bring out the texture of the well weathered wood. This resulted in a very noisy sky, so in Photoshop I layered in the sky from the -2 bracket and then used Luminar Neo to remove a wire from the sky. I skewed the top of the image slightly to the left (though maybe I shouldn't have, because this structure was definitely ready to collapse), then expanded the canvas a bit at top and left using content aware. Enjoy!

Maybe a touch strong on the saturation in the grasses for my taste, but well done and very much in the style we have been seeing in the abandoned building shots you have shared. You are developing a nice portfolio of these.   Posted: 07/15/2024 20:51:47

Thanks Rick. I know, others have sometimes commented that my greens are a bit too saturated. I guess I've developed a liking for vibrant greens.   Posted: 07/15/2024 21:17:37

Nice composition and placement of the barn. I would consider some added work on the sky. You might consider pulling some of the yellow out of the grasses too.   Posted: 07/17/2024 17:33:26

I like the barn a lot, the texture of the wood and the composition and wonderful.

I would think that you could easily make the sky pop more and tone down the neon grass.   Posted: 07/23/2024 05:00:35

Don, The colors are nice in this image. It has good saturation of the building and suggestions have been made that the color was too bright. That may have been because you took this when Spring is in its prime. The sky does need some contrast to show slightly better. I do agree that subtle changes suggestion would improve it.   Posted: 07/24/2024 02:02:00

Thanks for your comments. I've tried to follow them by adding a curves adjustment to the skjy and a hye/saturation mask to the grass, darkening and desaturating it a bit. What do you think?
BTW, I used the new object selection tool to select the grass. It made very quick work on tyhis task.   Posted: 07/24/2024 16:08:37

I like the updates, the grass looks much better and a little more in the sky. Your improvements have probably given the barn new life, LOL.   Posted: 07/24/2024 17:12:37

Personal choice perhaps, but I'd like to see a little more of the surrounding barn. Not a lot, but to my eye it's cropped too tight. Old barn wood rocks. ;)   Posted: 07/30/2024 19:07:21
