Weathered Barn by Don Poulton

September 2023 - Weathered Barn

About the Image(s)

Last spring in Tennessee, this old weathered barn cried out to me for an image, and I shot the usual set of brackets to capture its detail including dark interior areas visible through the openings. I processed the images in Nik HDR Efex Pro using a strong photorealistic preset that brought out the grungy nature of the barn. In Photoshop, I replaced the sky of the Nik result with the -2 bracket, then added two selective color adjustment layers. One was on the barn, where I warmed up the color tones and reduced the reddish color of the roof, and the second was on the sky, where I removed a bluish tint that was originally present.

Don, This is a barn with a good sky. It has good composition and detail of the old wood showing character. I would recommend you work some on the contrast, however, you wanted to bring out the "grungy nature of the barn." I can accept that.   Posted: 09/13/2023 21:21:19

Love the old barn, but overall, the image feels a bit flat. I think a touch more contrast would improve it. The sky is great with lots of texture! I did a quick down and dirty edit - bumped up the contrast and cooled the image a bit. See what you think... Just my opinion, right?   Posted: 09/14/2023 08:15:38

I feel the composition is effective and the idea of going to the grunge side of the HDR spectrum entirely reasonable for the subject material. I do agree with the others that the overall image feels flat and trapped somewhat in the midtones. I'm picking up what seems to be a general warmish cast and feel that may be working against your goal of the grunge rendering.   Posted: 09/16/2023 13:51:54

Thanks everyuone for your comments. Jane, your increase in contrast looks good on the barn, but it makes the foreground tree and grass seem overdone. I agree Rick that I could bring the color temperature down a bit.   Posted: 09/18/2023 10:23:46

Great old building, photogenic and interesting. I do agree with everyone that image needs a bit more contrast and texture to bring overall. I think Jane is going in the right direction and reducing the green saturation would be the next step.   Posted: 09/18/2023 11:04:42

I like the old barn and the composition. You have a good eye for subjects like this. The angle of the barn lets us see a lot.
The tone mapping is good, with lots of details and continuum.

The barn seems washed out and yellow. I masked the sky and the barn and added more contrast and color to the barn.

I wish we could see the RAW files for images like this...
