Fast Flowing Stream by Don Poulton

April 2025 - Fast Flowing Stream

About the Image(s)

Last fall during my trip to the West Coast to see my son and his family, I found a mountain stream that was flowing fast through a forested valley. Without my tripod because of baggage limit considerations, I shot two HDR sequences of this scene. The first one I shot the usual brackets around a speed of 1/125 at f/5.6 and ISO 1600 (it was just after sunrise and not very bright). Then, braced as well as possible against a tree, I shot around a speed of 0.6 sec. and f/5.6, SO 100. I tone mapped both sets in Aurora HDR 2019 using a Natural preset, then took them into Photoshop where O layered them and masked the unsharp parts of the slow speed image away to reveal the sharp rocks and retain the flowing water from the slow speed image. I also used the remove tool to clean up numerous small distractions and Topaz Denoise AI to remove noise from the high ISO image.
