Mormon Barn 2015 by Rick Cloran, HonPSA, MPSA

March 2025 - Mormon Barn 2015

About the Image(s)

A pretty basic shot of the barn on Mormon Row in the Tetons. Five exposures at one stop intervals around a base exposure of 1/13 sec, F 16, iso 400 using a Canon 5R MK III and 24-105 Canon lens at 67mm. Raw files were processed in DxO Pure Raw 4. The blend was done in Aurora 2019 using the Fix Dark preset with a few tweaks to the settings. The sky was adjusted in the Camera Raw Filter using masking on the sky and adding some Dehaze and Clarity while pulling back on the whites and highlights. The barn was adjusted in a separate mask using a little Dehaze, Clarity and Texture and a plus .25 stop on exposure. The mountains were tuned in Photoshop using a selection intersected with a mids three mask and applying contrast. The color for the grasses and trees was tweaked using a Selective Color layer. A slight crop up from the bottom from the original frame.

After looking through the materials I have decided there looks to be enough there to do the upgrade to DxO Pure Raw 5. Release date is set for Mid-April, so it will be the May image before I can share the results. For those who like to fine tune contrast, remember that Topaz Studio 2 is still available in the legacy downloads from Topaz. You need a Topaz account, but the app is free as far as I have been able to tell based on others who have downloaded it at my suggestion. The Precision Contrast Filter is pretty nice. It is available in both Mac and Windows formats.

Another stunning capture from the Tetons! Your technique really brings out the beauty of this iconic barn and location. I've also become a fan of DxO Pure Raw, and after seeing your results, I'm even more tempted to upgrade. Excellent work!   Posted: 03/11/2025 10:25:08

Truly a beautiful location and your conditions looks good, possibly a few too many clouds covering up the color of the sunset. Processing looks good, possibly a little bright for the time of day and it is cropped pretty tight on the left.   Posted: 03/17/2025 13:35:46

Well done. Brad has a point -- you could try a sunset sky replacement and maybe blend in some of the clouds.   Posted: 03/29/2025 15:59:11
