January 2025 - Spokane River View

About the Image(s)

Taken during the Spokane Festival several years back. A less “normal” bracket this time using a Canon 5D MK III and Sigma 24-105 lens at F11. The first three shots were iso 400 and 4, 15, and 30 seconds. The fourth shot was iso 800 and 30 seconds to get a little more in the way of effective exposure into the river area. The raw files were processed in DxO Pure Raw 4. The blend was done in Auroa 2019 using Tonal Compression. In PS I did perspective correction to clean up the buildings and streetlights. I know the center piling on the pavilion looks off, but that is how it shows from a number of angles that night. There were some odd shadows in the river from the lights hitting wires and those were removed. I also had to resort to an HSL layer to clean up the chromatic aberration that was on all of the lights in the pavilion.

Well done, Rick, you took great care in your processing to get things as accurate as possible. I see your explanation about the center piling on the pavilion, but am wondering if you could select the pavilion and apply a skew distortion in Photoshop to get the piling upright. I also removed a light between the pavilion and the clock tower.   Posted: 01/14/2025 10:34:02

Your scene shows well at the top, and Don recommended some lights be removed. I'm going to lighten the river and take off some of it. That would be up to you.

It is a good picture of both the buildings of the Spokane Worlds Fair.   Posted: 01/23/2025 23:19:21

Nicely done. Love the texture of the water. Interesting technique, now filed away in my to try list. ;)   Posted: 01/25/2025 15:21:26

Well done, cool building and blue hour is such a nice time to shoot. The blends looks very natural and I was guessing this is the way the building tilted. You could crop a pinch off the bottom, either way works. Perhaps remove the purple reflection in the water.   Posted: 01/26/2025 08:45:13
