Up and Over by Andrew Lewis

April 2025 - Up and Over

About the Image(s)

This month's image is titled "Up and Over". I took a sports photography workshop with our state photographers group. It was a pretty productive day. We spent the morning at a regional youth track meet, went to lunch, then finished the afternoon at a complex with about 9 fields for softball and baseball. It was a fantastic day!

I took this image with a Nikon D850 with a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR lens zoomed to 170mm at ISO 64, f/3.5, 1/2000 sec. I did almost no post production, except for cropping, straightening, this is straight out of camera.

Very good use of your camera. The fast shutter stoped the action. The wide aperture keeps the eye on your subject. A real moment in time. The low ISO surprizes me. That is a fast lens.   Posted: 04/05/2025 16:27:44

I also can feel the pain. Great shot with all the right settings. Is that a high jump? I find myself wondering which sport this is. I was wondering if putting in more objects to give the sport more context would be good or even possible. The name does give it some context.   Posted: 04/16/2025 17:44:10

You got your moneys worth from that workshop Andrew. Great capture. You snapped the shutter at the perfect time to tell this story. I am thinking "the agony of defeat", if you remember that quote from a past Olympics. Not only did you catch the jumper in a great position you also have good light on his face letting us see what he is feeling. Your f2.8 did its job well, blurring the background so we focus only on the subject. You might try to remove that bit of red (a flag?) on the right to clean it up a bit. This image looks like a seasoned pro took it. Bravo!   Posted: 04/16/2025 21:31:09

When I first looked at this image, I thought it was competitive break dancing. Then I noticed the pole.   Posted: 04/16/2025 22:04:54
