About the Image(s)
While in Kauai a few weeks ago, I was struck by the sight of hens and roosters roaming freely. The origins of these feral chickens trace back centuries to the red jungle fowl, brought to Hawaii by the Polynesians. More recently, hurricanes in 1982 and 1992 devastated chicken farms, releasing domestic birds into the wild, where they interbred with their jungle-dwelling ancestors.
I chose a close crop for this portrait to highlight the intensity of the rooster’s gaze and the intricate textures of the his feathers and comb??”capturing both his rugged beauty and untamed spirit.
