Fly Fisherman by Andrew Lewis

November 2024 - Fly Fisherman

About the Image(s)

My entry this month is titled "Fly Fisherman". I took it on our Lancaster Photography Association's fall colors trip in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. This is above Bishop, California. We were chasing up and down the canyons, looking for the trees in their glory. We had a great trip! This spot has good trees around it, as well as the really picturesque creek. We generally catch people fishing there as well, which makes it interesting.

I took this with a Nikon D850, Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 lens. ISO was 500, f/8, 1/500 sec. The sun had gone down behind the mountain when I took this, so I bumped the saturation and contrast in the image, and opened up the shadows a little, but no major changes to the image.

I hope everyone has a great month!

Hi Andrew,

What a peaceful scene! You captured it perfectly. The route 395 area of California is one of my favorite places. While I imagine there could have been many people fishing, I like that you were able to isolate one person in this lovely stream with its tall grasses. I don't have anything to suggest....except getting that fisherman to wear a red shirt. :-)

Well done.

Thanks, Bunny. I've only recently discovered this part of the world, and I'm glad I did! Every time I go up there it seems like I find a new treasure. Holler if you're ever in the area. I'll meet you there. (Did someone say "Group 43 Outing"??)
I'll see what I can do about the red shirt. ;-)   Posted: 11/16/2024 20:49:04

Nice find Andrew. Looks like a beautiful spot for fishing. I like that you captured the fisherman's entire rod and the line coming off of the tip as well. Gives us a complete story, in my opinion. Your whole image intrigues me. My first inclination is to move the man over to the left (if possible) on the 1/3 line so he is casting into the shot. I think this would give you a more dynamic look here. My second thought is, additionally, to show us more of the rocks in the back--in other words a more expansive shot. I say that because I am curious as to what they look like. It may distract from your subject too much, but they do look interesting. Anyway, nice work, good exposure and lots of interest.   Posted: 11/15/2024 22:51:44

Thanks, Bruce. That was a tough decision as I was cropping. I wanted to maintain the detail of the fisherman and not have too much negative space, but the rod tip and line does complete the story. Here's another angle, showing more of the surroundings. I'm torn because I want to narrow the focus to the fisherman but how do you not include the natural beauty? So much to soak in up there, that's for sure. Thanks for the things to think about.   Posted: 11/16/2024 20:54:36

Well, they both are keepers. Thanks for showing the full beauty of the location in your second image. I think you chose the best one to submit!   Posted: 11/25/2024 22:37:22

Andrew, nice CATCH. Good framing to get the rod and line being cast. I wonder if darkening or slightly blurring the rocks and trees would change the viewing dynamics. Would it add focus or would it detract. It would be nice to be out there and forget the state of the world. Thanks for the break.   Posted: 11/16/2024 15:18:27

Catch! I see what you did there, Harley. Altering the background is always a challenge when you have an area that is so breathtaking in its scenery. If you blur or darken the area to accentuate your subject it almost loses something. It certainly is a toss-up. Taking a break from the world is why we do this, right? Glad I could help us stop and take a breath.   Posted: 11/16/2024 20:57:05

Andrew- I did not see the image you posted after Bruce's comment. Not sure why not, it is above my comment. I like the full image much much better. The scenery and the placement of the fisherman. I think you netted a great one but previously cut it off at the knees, or should I say Hip. also, the smaller real estate the fisherman occupys even accentuates the majesty of the environment.   Posted: 11/17/2024 01:13:48
