The recluse. Just an idea I’ve had for some time and decided to see what I can do to bring it to life. All parts photographed by me, the hands are mine.

Nadia, It very creative and very eerie. The hands and arms reaching for the dessert are really intriguing. The whole concept is almost scary, but excellent for the creative category.One wonders here our minds go when we dream uproar create images. I say, the further out, the better. Your image raises some questions. Is the person behind the door the recluse, afraid that someone will steal his food? Is the hand coming through the wall the recluse , not able to reach his food? Maybe it is about someone's difficult relationship with food...such as, I want it but I can't get to it or shouldn't have it. Altogether most intriguing. Nadia, You've scored another excellent image here. I am first attracted to the beautiful textural tonal background which is skillfully lit. You've created a compelling still life with the addition of the chair. After taking that all in I loved the surreal finale. I agree with Ian in considering removing one of the hands. I also wonder if the arm emerging from the hole in the wall might benefit from darkening slightly. All in all an image that keeps drawing me back. Well done. Posted: 08/16/2026 19:06:33
Your pictures always contain a story (or many stories). Yes, at first a puzzle. Why three hands if there is only one recluse. But I think this could be about time - the two hands on the door indicate the desire for solitude, the hand reaching for the food is a different time when the recluse is safely inside. Of course, this is only one explanation. It would be interesting to know what your intention was with this picture, but it tells a story anyway, even though we probably don't see the meaning you had in mind at the time of creation. Thanks for your thorough comments Ian. I like your question of "why three hands if there's only one recluse" - well, the two hands on the door are meant to suggest anxiety, chaos in thinking and hesitation of coming out the door to get the food off the chair and so moves around the door, "will I or won't I" type of thinking and behaviour; he/she doesn't want to come out and be exposed no matter how hungry. The hand coming out of the hole is a desperate attempt to get to the food, it's suppose to be the closest point to the chair.
In my original, I had four hands around the door and though it was too much, I like the two, it expresses my thoughts on why I did this image. Many years ago, I had a neighbour who was and probably still is a hermit/recluse he was put into a home to be cared, that's the reason for the door with the sign "Private" indicating the person is in a home care situation doesn't want to be disturbed and so the nurse/care givers place the food on the chair.
