Amazon Sunset by Don Hill

April 2026 - Amazon Sunset

About the Image(s)

Happy April. Last year we visited the Amazon Rain Forest in Ecuador. The region was in a drought, so the middle of the river was one huge sandbar. Our motorized canoe landed on the sandbar so we could say goodnight to the sun as it sank behind the Peruvian Alps. The footprints on the sand were from our group who ran back to the boat as the guide opened bottles of Champagne. Two of the guides relaxed on some fallen trees. One of the most memorable sunsets so far.

The image was captured with my iphone, and it was processed in Adobe Camera and Photoshop.

Hi Don, this is an interesting photo that illustrates your story well. It seems like this memory is one that you remember with fondness. Not sure if you are able to add a little light around the men to help them stand out.   Posted: 04/03/2026 10:11:29

Thank you Julie. Ironically, I took the two out of my final image (not here) I am not sure they added anything to the shot.

To me, this is a bit understated. I would suggest lightening the shadow areas, boosting the sunset and cropping out some of the right hand side which doesn't have much going on.   Posted: 04/04/2026 15:02:25

Thank you Andrew. I agree with your comment. It was getting dark and I guess it looked like how I remembered it. As far as the right side, I wanted to show the how wide the river was. You are right... not much going on. Thanks.   Posted: 04/07/2026 05:37:03

Hi Don, I like your composition and how all of the lines lead to the center of the X where the 2 guides are. It's very interesting to see how wide the Amazon river is from your photo! I recommend lightening the area where the men are sitting and maybe even the long log on the left to lead you to them. You might want to remove the clump of logs at the bottom left, denoise, increase saturation for the sunset colors, and use defringe (lens correction) in LR to reduce the purple in the sand. Looks like a great trip!   Posted: 04/04/2026 18:10:29

Hi Don - there is a lot happening in this image. I agree with the suggestions to lighten the men. I didn't see them at first as my eye was drawn to the sunset and the reflection on the water on the left side.   Posted: 04/06/2026 18:18:00
