Prison in the End of the World by Ling Ling Juang

November 2025 - Prison in the End of the World

About the Image(s)

Here is a notorious prison in early 20th century housing the political exiles and dangerous criminals; located in Ushuaia- the southernmost city in the world. I seldom do black and white photos but many of you are very good at it. May be you can give me some suggestions. Thank you.

Hi Ling Ling,

consider lightning the shadows on the doors , especially the one at the end of the walkway path. This may add extra interest to your image. There are a couple of lighter coloured doors where we can see the detail they contain. There are many leading lines leading us to the end of the pathway, but we can't see what is there. Great try at monochrome. Keep it up!   Posted: 11/09/2025 00:36:39

Thank you, Julie. I see your points. I didn't even think of the dark doors, haha. I tried to lighten them, here it is.   Posted: 11/10/2025 00:14:00

Hey Ling Ling, Nice interior shot. My first thought was about the overall perspective. I straightened the room and noticed the pole in the middle of the image that is leaning to the right. I removed the distraction. I did not make any other changes. Overall, there is a lot to look at here, especially the nice textures. I would like to have seen the original.   Posted: 11/09/2025 06:00:03

Thank you, Don, for your suggestion.
I actually like the stove and the crooked pipe in the end of the hallway. This prison is spooky when I thought about how the inmates endured the harsh winter with only one stove for the whole wing.   Posted: 11/10/2025 00:26:02

Hey Ling Ling, this is a very spooky image. I see your point about the pipe. No matter how long I looked at your image, I could not focus on anything but the pipe. It's just me. I think you have a good eye. It is the kind of interior stuff I would love to shoot. I have a spooky (my opinion) prison shot on group 88. check it out.   Posted: 11/12/2025 17:50:39

Hi Ling Ling - I love monochrome and what an interesting shot to capture textures and contrast. My eye wants to follow the leading lines in the floor, the ceiling and then the giant "X" marking the spot higher up. I think the doors could be a story all by themselves.   Posted: 11/09/2025 14:48:30

Hi Ling Ling, I think you did well to choose monochrome for this image. It definitely fits the theme of a spooky abandoned prison. I think you could keep the crooked stovepipe since it's part of the story. You might want to lighten the darkest areas and darken the brightest areas so we can see more detail in everything. The ceiling on the bottom floor has some very scary-looking HOLES which would be great to call attention to. I think you can do a lot with this photo! Well done!   Posted: 11/16/2025 19:19:46

I find it really atmospheric; it just needs straightening and the doors lightening a bit. Perhaps crop in to the second set of doors.   Posted: 11/17/2025 21:12:28

Nice photo Ling Ling. You have black blacks and whites. I agree about lightening the doors. The texture of that wood would be nice. I love old things and struggle with the straightening of busted up things. I do feel it is should straighten some and I would use the tiles on the floor to straighten. Your eye would follow that into the picture and towards the light. Well seen.   Posted: 11/21/2025 16:19:01
