About the Image(s)

Details: Nikon Z8 with NIKKOR 16??“80 mm f/2.8 ??“ 4E; 1/15 sec at f/6.3, ISO 400

How I did it: I took this last May in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It was an attempt to do something different with an overly photographed subject. The cabin window reflects the barn situated behind it on the hill.

It was a very rainy day, with several potential lighting issues including window glare and hotspots on the other side of the window created by chinks in the logs.

I tried to frame the photo in alignment with the window frame itself, giving me a very short depth of field, which created challenges in 1) lines of the window weren’t very straight and 2) little fuzzy in the foreground.

I looked at this in both color and black and white. The color version was more about capturing the feeling of a rainy, spring day and rustic life, while the black and white was more about the nostalgia.

Using Photoshop I straightened and cropped, and then did some tweaks to the exposure and contrast. For the color version, there was also a small adjustment to the temp, and some sharpening to the frame on the far right. For the BW version I applied a High Contrast Red Filter and then lightly burned some of the highlights and midtones along the windows.

I am looking for suggestions and comments on the updated image, as well as impressions regarding color or black and white for telling the story.

Hi Shari and welcome to this part of the Group! I do think you have processed the image well. I will say that when I first saw your image, I looked for a fairy hiding somewhere on the left side of the image! The coloured version adds mystique and I find myself exploring the forest. The only comment I could say is to try burning the horizontal part of the frame on the right side of the image. I feel it is still too bright (compared to the other parts of the frame) and it is drawing my eye continually.   Posted: 11/09/2025 00:46:36

Hi, Shari,
I really like your treatments of this photo, it's a creative idea to make the reflection the subject of interest. I am in favor of the color one; love the green forest and the old cabin inside the glass is more visible.   Posted: 11/10/2025 00:46:15

Hey Sherri, again, welcome to the group. Nice image. I like the angle you took it at. I think maybe a little higher f stop might give you more DOF and make the wood on the right more in focus. I have to admit, I did not see the building on the reflection in the upper right pane. I put the image in Adobe Camera Raw and used the Landscape Mask and just highlighted the panes. Then I just lightened it up. Cool Shot, definitley a color shot. Nice. Thanks for sharing.   Posted: 11/12/2025 18:04:47

Hi Shari, welcome to the group! I think you did a really nice job of post processing. I definitely prefer the color one better - the greens against the rustic wood are so nice, and it provides separation and attention to the barn. I don't notice the barn in the b&w one. I agree with Julie that the wood on the right side should be darkened. You might also want to darken the white vertical reflection in the glass and lighten the barn a little bit to bring a little more attention to it. Well done!   Posted: 11/16/2025 19:02:06

Welcome to the group. This is a striking picture. My only criticism is that the right hand window frame is out of focus and as this is nearest the camera it detracts. Better to focus on that side perhaps with a smaller f stop. I hope you dont mind but I ran the image through Topaz Sharpen and I think it is better. I agree with the comments about darkening the white vertical reflection.   Posted: 11/17/2025 21:02:30

Welcome Shari!
Love the reflection and old structures. That vertical light reflection does distract me and draws more attention to the out of focus board. This is a very intriguing shot and good eye!   Posted: 11/21/2025 16:07:32
