About the Image(s)

Near the base of the Eiffel Tower there was an area with vendors in small tents selling various types of snacks and souvenirs. This vendor was selling nougat from gigantic blocks and was offering samples. I motioned to him asking if I could take his picture, and he posted for me very nicely I like the way he's standing and looking so proud, and he looks very French to me. I'm also including the original for comparison. I decided to crop out the other two men and bring more attention to the man posing for me. I intend to submit this for my club's street photography competition (along with my June photo of the woman buying a small plastic Eiffel Tower souvenir). I darkened the white nougat and lightened the man in post processing.

Hey Janice. Nice image. As we have all said before, I am not sure what the rules are for your club as far as editing. I did a slightly different crop to more see the entire items on the right of the person. I also did not crop as tight on the left. I think I may have cropped out too much above his head, but I wanted to see more of the products he had. Do you print these or do you submit them as digital images? anyway, I would like to submit more stuff for contest, but our club was never the same after that great pandemic. Keep shooting and remember that comments from judges or even from us, are not to be taken too seriously.   Posted: 07/06/2025 22:19:03

Janice, I had to look after you said what group you were in. I like this shot a lot and the seller's expression is nice. However, posed shots are not permitting in photo travel, but this could be used in PID where there are people and street themes. It could also work as a monochrome in both categories.   Posted: 07/09/2025 18:10:20

Hi Janice,
Oh, I am drooling at the thought of all that yummy nougat! My first thought when I read your description was please be careful with the post processing. I suggest that you check the definition to see just what editing is allowed. In international competition pretty much nothing is allowed other than cropping (which you have done an excellent job with). I do like the angle you have taken this from, but please also check about posed photos as Judy alluded to. Good luck!   Posted: 07/17/2025 07:16:49

Hi Janice. I really like this shot - it really shows us something of French culture. I might try not to crop as much. I might leave the guy in the black next to him in cause his arm is there anyway and I might include some of the yellow and black bottom for context. The fact that he posed is part of his job to present his product and may be ok. I think it ads to the photo. Only the judge will decide and their decisions are just suggestions for your art. Good Luck.   Posted: 07/17/2025 12:27:55

Janice, this is a perfect portrait of a proud, haughty Frenchman displaying his tasty nougat. Your post processing is good. I would be tempted to crop in on the right and bottom but not much. Nice work!   Posted: 07/22/2025 21:32:33

Nice capture. I don't think it is is posed as in a "set up". My only comment is the camera is slightly tilted upwards and it might be worth considering straightening this.   Posted: 07/25/2025 12:28:49

Thanks for your input, everyone. I have added back in part of the left side of the original photo to include the guy in the back. It's good to know how other competitions set their rules in case I participate in the future. Is this revised photo better?   Posted: 07/28/2025 01:58:50
