About the Image(s)

My wife Terry likes flowers: these tulips, which she had in a vase, I placed on a table before a window looking out on Lake Superior. In camera raw I photographed the display, then took it in Adobe Bridge Camera Raw, did some cropping and played with the sliders. Then I used one of the Topaz filters to modify it and then in Photoshop 2025 applied the Posterize filter. Finally, I darkened the leaf bending over on the right so that would not be so obvious to the eye. The result is rather bold and painterly, which I like.

What do you think and what would you do differently?

Equipment: Canon R5 and Canon rf24-105 zoom lens, 1/500 @ f9.5, tripod, natural window light

Hey Henry, I love your flower pictures. I have not had this much fun in a long time. I took your original and did some slider stuff in Adobe Camera Raw and opened it in Photoshop. Then I went to generative expand and added some to the bottom of the image so it looked like a vase sitting on a ledge overlooking the ocean. I know this is your image and I hope you don't mind me showing you the fun I had. Now, this is for you and Catherine in our group. If you go to filters and open Neural filters, you can easily spend an hour playing with different filters. I opened one and told it to go to sunset in the desert and it did this. I love your shot that looks like you painted it. I just wanted you to see how you can play with your flower shots . I really liked your watercolor effects. I included Catherine in my comments because I have put some of her images into the Neural filters. Wish I was at your place, it is going to be 103 this week.   Posted: 07/06/2025 21:57:39

Don, I have been slow in responding to your post. I just now had time to examine Neural filters. I note a number of plans and things to do. I am contemplating what to do. Do you have any recommendations on a plan for Photoshop and how to start learning how to use Neural filters?   Posted: 07/28/2025 20:11:08

Hi Henry, I really like what you did with this! The colors and crop are just perfect. The only change I would make is to the dark green leaf hanging down. Its coloring is different than the rest, and it doesn't have much shading like all of the other parts of the image. Can you lighten it or add some shading to the one leaf? Otherwise I wouldn't change anything!   Posted: 07/10/2025 15:52:27

Janice, thanks for your reply. Your suggestion to darken down the one leaf is good.   Posted: 07/28/2025 20:16:10

Hi Henry, You must have had a lot of fun playing with this photograph. I'm amazed that you can get such a painterly finish to a photograph. I agree with Janice's comments about the texture of "the" leaf. It does look a bit plain. I don't mind it being darker though. Hope you have plenty of wall space at home!   Posted: 07/17/2025 07:22:20

Hi Henry this is fun and lovely. Thanks for the reminder to be artists and truly create our images as art. I love the camo looking background. This reminds me of the paint by numbers look I used to love painting. Well done.   Posted: 07/17/2025 12:13:44

I really like the treatment, Henry. A painterly effect that really works for me. I agree with Janice about the dark green leaf hanging down - better removed.   Posted: 07/22/2025 16:05:56

Andrew, thanks for the comments. Yes, I can remove the left hanging leaf which would improve the image.   Posted: 07/28/2025 20:23:22

Henry,
Your flower photos are the most beautiful I have seen. This one is really amazing, the colors are so perfect together; it's like a museum piece.
I learn something today, you can actually make a painting out of a photo. Thank you for sharing.   Posted: 07/23/2025 00:27:33
