About the Image(s)
In a quiet fishing village, I setup my camera on a sidewalk in front of this view. After a couple hours and many clicks away, I caught this sunset light. ISO400, 1/15, f20, because I want to blur the water. What would you think I should have done to get a peaceful image of this scene?

Hey Ling Ling. Very nice image. I see where you were going here. A fishing village the sun going down And a beautiful mountain. I cropped the sides a little to emphasize the fishing boats and keep the soft water effect. I cropped more from the right to make the image more off center. I sharpened the mountain for more detail, and left the water alone. I tried to get the sky to look more orange but did not succeed. I am sure someone else in the group can help me with that. Your image did not need all this, but I always like to just throw out things that can be done. You have all the elements of a really great image. Even the red arch. Nice.   Posted: 07/06/2025 22:36:00
Don,
I always appreciate your many suggestions, though some are way over my head. Haha. Thank you for sharing them, so I learned many different ways to "skin a cat", haha   Posted: 07/17/2025 05:12:26

Hi Ling Ling, this is so beautiful! And I LOVE Japan!!! You're so lucky you were able to see Mt. Fuji clearly. You might try bringing more attention to the red torii gate by lightening the trees behind it and by cropping a little from the bottom left corner (left side and bottom of the image). It would've been really interesting to see this with smoother water, like you said, but you would've had to have a slower timing which might have required a darkening filter so the sky wouldn't be blown out. Or maybe just lower ISO. Or you could blur the water in Lightroom! Hahaha! I also wanted to mention I think your photos have been getting better and better over the past year or so!!! Well done!   Posted: 07/10/2025 16:11:24
Thank you…Janice. I love that torii gate, and tried to get it more visible. I cropped the photo to make the torii bigger, but Mount Fuji becomes bigger too; it seems to me a different photo altogether. Anyway, I chose this version to see more harbor and set Mount Fuji as background.
I learned a lot from you all since I joined this group.especially about what makes a good picture.. I am not a diligent photographer though, I only take photos when I travel.   Posted: 07/17/2025 05:09:34

Hi Ling Ling, I like the subtle colours in your image. If you use lightroom, try selecting just the water area and play with the texture slider taking it to the left to see if that helps achieve the milky water effect. I would also lower the highlight levels of the water. You have a lovely image of Mt Fuji.   Posted: 07/17/2025 03:58:13
Thank you! Great idea, I will try that!   Posted: 07/17/2025 04:48:59
Hi Ling Ling. What a lovely shot. I have not seen this view before. With the new landscape masking in LR, I would play with the mountain to see if you could pull out a little detail. This photo looks like a film capture and an older photo.   Posted: 07/17/2025 12:33:32
Hi,Catherine,
You are very observant; this is not a tourist spot for Mt. Fuji. We found the picture in Google map; thought the location is very promising. We were not very well prepared since there was no parking space for a bus nor any store open nearby. Though we were hungry, cold, and in need of a toilet after the photography session, I am very glad we found this place.   Posted: 07/23/2025 00:19:13

Ling Ling, I think you have captured the quiet beauty of sunset at Fuji. To make the scene more abstract you could use a tripod or set your camera on an object and use a neutral density filter or slower ISO and a slower shutter speed. You could also not focus your lens sharply so the image is soft.
It looks to me as though the sun is setting behind a tall tree on the point. Do you have an image before the sun is setting behind the tree? That might make the image softer.
I like that the volcano is not centered in the image and that the ships add interest to the foreground. Nice sunset picture!
The others have some good ideas.   Posted: 07/22/2025 22:42:01

Thank you, Henry. You are absolutely correct. The only problem was I forgot to bring the tripod off the bus. I had to hold my camera on a fence and hold my breath to be very still.   Posted: 07/23/2025 00:22:19
Pleasant image. I think there is too much water in the foreground. I would be tempted to lighten (the trees seem a bit dark) and crop some of the LHS, RHS and the bottom off.   Posted: 07/25/2025 14:53:09
