About the Image(s)
This is a fox in my neighborhood from last spring. Is this a good candidate for a "negative space" competition? Any suggestions for changes?

Hi Janice, Great photo! I love the way the fox is looking straight at you while it thinks it is hiding in the long grass. I can't think of anything I'd do to it. Good luck in the competition.   Posted: 03/14/2025 05:19:42
Janice, I have trouble understanding what negative space is so please enlighten me. That aside, I would do some cropping on the top to eliminate all of the dark background. And I would crop in on the bottom to make the fox a definite center of interest. Well, I guess I would crop in on the sides too. But maybe that eliminates negative space.   Posted: 03/16/2025 16:17:23
Hey Janice. Nice image. I took Henry's suggestion and cropped your image. I also saw some distractions that I removed. I follow some photographers who never edit their images. They call themselves "purist". When I look at an image and say, "what is that white spot on the subjects face?", it just, to me, becomes a distraction. So, I hope I have not offended anyone for cleaning up, and adding a little deNoise to your image. I think after the crop, I was up in the air about which I liked better. I left your subject off-center, as it seemed to co-exist with the background better (in my opinion). So these are all just my opinion and If I am trying to make a point, or show an image in a certain way, I don't always make changes. Your image is very good, and I enjoyed it and think you captured the subject at a great pose.   Posted: 03/19/2025 15:30:05
Nicely caught. I think it would be better slightly cropped.   Posted: 03/22/2025 16:29:23
Hi Janice. Nice capture of the fox. This is an unusual photo, but nicely shows true behavior. Yes, I think it uses negative space well. It is interesting that he is in such an open area and it is nice to capture that. This photo would also make a good one to publish, because editors need a good subject with space to add the print. Good luck on the competition and submit it for publication!   Posted: 03/25/2025 13:26:34
Thank you, everyone!!! I really appreciate everyone's comments! Catherine, I didn't know that! Don, I really like your edits and will try to do the same thing. Henry, negative space is kind of plain, bland, uninteresting, often same-colored background that should be un-noticeable around the subject. Lots of space in the photo is "unused" and can make the subject stand out more.   Posted: 03/26/2025 03:03:26
Hi, Janice,
I like all your photos so far.. you have sharp eyes and quick hands. Your natural life photos are amazing, and this one is very interesting.
Despite the cropping ideas, I sort of agreeing with you keeping a vast grass field surrounding the fox. The point is we all know what the focal point is, and it is sneaking in the deep gras, trying to get closer.
The colors are very nice together too.   Posted: 03/27/2025 04:26:57
