Mystical Aspen Woods by Ling Ling Juang

February 2025 - Mystical Aspen Woods

About the Image(s)

In early September in Alaska, you can see aspens turning yellow as far as your eyes can reach. I love aspens, and I took tons of photos of them. One of them I tried is to shake my camera intentionally to create the mystical effect. It took me many tries to come up with this one: taken f14, 1/8 seconds. I think I need to practice the technique more. Please share how I can improve it.

I've tried this and not got anywhere so good attempt. I've found one can get quite a different effect panning up-down as opposed to down-up. Perhaps try more like 1/4s too.   Posted: 02/18/2025 14:50:24

Thank you, Don.
I might have moved this one up and down. Will keep experimenting.

Hey Ling Ling, I really like your image. I have never tried this. I have a hard enough time keeping my camera still. I like the colors and do not really know what I would do, so I did not even open your shot. I would check the box next to intentional camera shake and move on. I may play around with this later.   Posted: 02/19/2025 04:52:21

Ling Ling, I think you captured a beautiful impressionistic image of the yellows and greens of Alaska. May I suggest you see the work of Charles Needle on the internet and get his book Impressionistic Photography which has a number of techniques for doing what you are doing.   Posted: 02/20/2025 15:15:27

Ling Ling I really like this photo. I see way too many ICM photos that look the same and I really like this one where there is still detail. The colors are spectacular. The only thing I see is there is a bit of a white halo on the front tree. The white "shadow" is a little distracting. Well done.   Posted: 02/20/2025 17:25:19

Thank you.. I see the shadows. This really needs more practices. Haha.   Posted: 02/20/2025 17:53:47
