About the Image(s)

This photo captures vibrant traditional Sri Lankan dancers performing in elaborate costumes during a cultural festival held in Colombo in 2016. The dancers are adorned in colorful attire with ornate headdresses and masks, representing characters from Sri Lankan folklore and mythology. This traditional Kolam dance is a significant part of Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage and festival celebrations.

Kolam is a folk dance-drama originating from rural Sri Lanka. Similar to other traditional theatre forms in South Asia, the term Kolam refers to disguise and mimicry. Performers wear masks and costumes, using mime, dance, and occasional dialogue to portray their characters.
