Steller's Sea Eagle by Peter Cheung

January 2025 - Steller's Sea Eagle

About the Image(s)

Two years ago in Feb, we participated in a bird watching cruise in Rausu to watch and take photos of the magnificent Steller's sea eagles and white-tailed eagles. It was an amazing trip, although the weather was quite warm and windy so there was very little drift ice on the sea. We were able to get a close look at these majestic birds, mainly Steller's sea eagles and white-tailed eagles. The camera settings are Sony a7rIII, Sony 200-600mm, 1/2000 sec, 200mm, f/6.3, ISO 1250. In post-processing, I cropped half of the image to make the bird larger, used Topaz denoise AI to reduce noise and sharpen the bird, and brightened up the shadow slightly.

The image shows an eagle hunting, a dynamic and impressive situation. The angle of the photo and the timing of the capture are unique and manage to emphasize the eagle's movement in an artistic and original way. The composition is lacking, I would have placed the eagle a little to the right according to the rule of thirds, so that it had more space to live in the foreground. The open wings lead the eye to the center of the action. The bird's gaze adds interest and attracts the eye. The focus is sharp, especially on the head and wings. The perspective manages to create a sense of movement and dynamism. The low angle adds to the dramatic dimension. The image is very emotionally strong. It conveys a sense of power and natural precision. In summary, the image is a technical and artistic masterpiece. It emphasizes the beauty and power of nature with skillful use of composition, lighting and photographic techniques   Posted: 01/08/2025 10:32:29

Wonderful capture Peter. You caught this eagle just at the peak of the action. Great color, sharpness and detail. The eye is nice and sharp. I agree with Joseph that it could have a little more room to the left and bottom to fly into.   Posted: 01/14/2025 22:34:55

I could look at this image all day Peter. It is so sharp and shows the entire body, head, beak, claws in wonderful sharpness.
Such focus - the bird I'm talking about - but your camera work as well. The background is nicely out of focus and the colours work well with the bird itself.
Yes, you could have a little space in front of the eagle for it to fly into but this image has me captivated.   Posted: 01/15/2025 08:28:59

Peter, your Sea Eagle was caught at the peak of action. Colors are perfect, image sharp and there are no distracting elements in the frame. Couldn't be any better.   Posted: 01/21/2025 19:09:38
