Golden Hour and Clouds in the Valley by Diane Ferdig

July 2024 - Golden Hour and Clouds in the Valley

About the Image(s)

This image was shot off my back deck during golden hour in early May. The sun will often hit this valley with incredible gold light and at the same time this evening there were low clouds. It was gorgeous. I edited it in Lightroom, leaning towards a fine art look. Shot with my Canon R6 and RF 24-105 f4-7.1 IS STM kit lens. 1/350, f8, iso200 at 105mm on 5/2/24 at 7:49 pm.

I got the feeling of a fairytale at first glance. I like the warm tone and the framing of the trees in the foreground. The layers of fog and mountains create a beautiful feeling of depth in the image. My only pick is the white spots to the left that grab the attention of the houses.   Posted: 07/23/2024 06:06:19

OK, Let's see what we have here. Are there any strong points?
1. Strong interesting subject well separated from the background, CHECK
2. Good use of lighting CHECK
3. Use of limited color palette using analogous colors. CHECK
4. Interesting use of natural framing. CHECK
5. Strong composition with a well defined foreground, midground and background. CHECK
6. Unique composition using weather conditions. CHECK
7. Technically strong showing correct exposure and sharpness. CHECK
8. Good use of diagonal lines. CHECK

Any visible negatives?
1. Oh my gosh!! What are those horrible distracting white things in the trees on the left? Totally unacceptable! :-)

All in all, a really good job! Well Done!! This looks like a place I would love to see appear in front of me after a long day's hike. I can almost smell a home cooked meal on the hearth. I'll have to pickup the pace so I won't miss supper.

What a beautiful image, Diane! I really appreciate the frame within a frame in your composition. The vibrant golden colors are striking, and the soft light hitting the clouds and valley effectively highlights those features. As others have mentioned, removing the white areas on the left side of the frame would enhance the overall impact of the image. Great job!   Posted: 07/23/2024 15:51:38

Larry nailed the strong points in this image, especially framing and color palette. I think you did a great job on DOF and sharpness where it needed to be. I agree with the points about eliminating the white buildings on the left. If I really wanted to pick nits, there is a section of the cloud that does not have color. I would consider making it consistent in color. Beautiful image.   Posted: 07/25/2024 20:25:12

Thank you for your input, Michael. I did not change the color of the clouds. I just enhanced the golden light hitting them. So the clouds that are whiter… That's the way they were. Probably because the sunlight wasn't hitting them the same.   Posted: 07/25/2024 20:40:11

Diane, This a good picture. The trees around are the background and the houses of the valley - as the main feature. I feel too much clarity but maybe Im wrong. The Crop adds as well. Nice !   Posted: 07/28/2024 13:25:56
