About the Image(s)

The church of Karei
I took this picture back in 2016 on a route I drove a few times, then finally I decided to go there specifically to photograph the church.
I picked a cloudy late afternoon summer day and added a red filter on BnW settings. The church is very small, maybe 600sqf, and I wanted to reflect it in the picture.
Camera nikon D800E with a 24-120 f4 zoom lens; iso 100; f8; tripod
Edit: adjusted histogram; increased clarity; and straightened the horizon

Almost a minimalistic photo. I like the composition, the sky, and the brightness of the church which draws the eye. My eye, however, is drawn to the strong contrast of the crop rows on the bottom right. I would consider either cropping up or in from the right. to reduce the effect. Just me.   Posted: 07/05/2026 16:49:16

Thank you. I contemplated on this however, since tonality, texture are equal and subtle I consider this more of telling the story, less of a distraction.

I find this to be a simplistic image that has considerable impact created by the white church. To my eye the steeple seems to be ever so slightly leaning to the left, but I could be wrong. Because the image has so few visual elements in it the plowed rows in the lower right corner draw a great deal of attention Perhaps cropping from the right would solve the problem.   Posted: 07/05/2026 18:44:33

Hi Adi. What stands out to me is the composition - specifically how the light in the upper right clouds almost repeats the light falling on the church. The two illuminated areas create an implied diagonal line that guides my eye back and forth through the frame. I usually prefer to minimize excess sky, but in this photo I wouldn't change the composition. The B/W conversion works well to simplify the scene. I also see the steeple lean a bit to the left. Nice job.   Posted: 07/06/2026 18:36:50

Barbara made a great point about the light in the upper right and the white of the church guiding the viewer's eye through the frame. I also like the way you have included the circle of trees around the church, setting it apart from whatever is going on in the field. Lovely scene.   Posted: 07/07/2026 20:36:35

Adi - this is a very powerful image that could be used to tell many stories from different perspectives. I agree that the rows in the field appear distracting at first, but for anybody who wants to pull a story out of this image of Man, Nature and/or spiritual greater powers that could use that as additional fuel to illustrate their story. The same argument could be made for the light in the sky contrasting against the darker clouds, the intense white of the church, and the story that another interpreter could build around that as well. You might want to play with a variety of crops to give more options for a storytelling. This is a fine image!   Posted: 07/11/2026 18:53:58

Indeed the intent is the connection between the field and the the people of the village. I do think that this was their original intent to build a church in the field surrounding the village.
