I took this picture at the base camp of Pitara Craului .This is a state park known for backpacking and climbing across europe. It was after sunset and I waited for tents to pop up and add color to the scene. I chose an ultra wide lens to emphasize the slopes on both sides of the hilltop. Since I was backpacking myself I had no tripod and had to adjust to the low light.
Camera Nikon D800E with a 20mm f2.8 nikkor lens @ f4.5.; iso 2000 ; S 1/20' camera at aperture priority. Edit - Raw mode brightness and contrast adjustments.

As a long time backpacker I see this as a campsite to dream of. That green tent on the left looks like one I used to have. The colorful tents really make this scene unique and the various layers between the foreground and the distant peaks create interesting depth and scale. This is certainly a "room with a view."
I get the idea of the wide angle lens being used increase the "hilly" look. But for me the amount of lean the tress on the right have make the scene feel fake. Ultra wide or not, I wish I could have slept in this campsite. (just not under those trees on the right.   Posted: 04/04/2026 21:22:20

Adi, The cheerful tents. The beautiful view. The pink sky after sunset. What a setting. I understand what Larry is saying about the lean on the trees on the right. What lens would be a better choice for that scene, I wonder. I'd love to have others weigh in on some concrete suggestions.   Posted: 04/05/2026 13:13:15

This is a well composed image with space for the tents, just the right amount of sky in the image to be over the tallest trees. The exposure captures the time of day. I think the wide-angle effect could be the artist's view by the maker. For me, I would consider using the LR straighten lines to make the trees upright and level the campground.   Posted: 04/05/2026 19:13:06

M,
Thanks for the good thoughts. Had I wanted to show flatter i would have chosen a 35mm instead.   Posted: 04/16/2026 16:10:42

Hi Adi. What a wonderful place to hike and spend the night (or two). I love the colorful tents and the arrangement on the hillside. The subtle sky color along with what looks like fog or a low lying cloud adds a nice touch. I agree with the others about the leaning trees. I tend to prefer them straightened, even though that means cropping the image a bit. Either way, it's a place I'd love to be. Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 04/08/2026 16:54:32

Hi Adi - as a long time hiker out west (USA), I truly appreciate the amazing view of tenting at high altitude - even though yours is European.

I would suggest that Lightroom offers the opportunity to make edits based on lenses, which may help adjust for the tree lean here.

Lightroom Classic has done a reasonably good job making amends for various lens issues. I would give this a try.

Otherwise - I love this view with these amazingly colorful tents!   Posted: 04/10/2026 03:08:49

Thanks G,
I chose a 20mm lens to emphasis this looks.

Hi Adi, I actually like the effect of the wide angle lens. The distortion does give the impression of being on the top of the world. That combined with the lovely sky and the colorful tents makes this one a winner to me!   Posted: 04/17/2026 21:36:24
