St. Joe Lighthouse by Michael Jack, QPSA

April 2026 - St. Joe Lighthouse

About the Image(s)

This image is at sunrise at the St Joseph lighthouse in Michigan. It was taken in January this year with the hopes the lighthouses would be snow and ice covered. However, just before the trip there was a heat-wave and rain which diminished the ice effect. There was still a lot of ice along the lake shore ,but it was mostly covered in sand because of high winds with gusts up to 50 mph.

Canon 5R, 24-105 L lens, ISO 6400, f9, 1/640 sec.

I'm a great fan of lighthouses and this is not an exception.
In spite of the warm colors in the sky, this images makes me feel cold. This has to be the result of the blues and whites that run throughout the image. These are chilling colors and their contrast in this soft and moody image just works for me. These feelings only are magnified when the image is enlarged. I like the space between the rail of the walkway and the horizon and I like that the light of the lighthouse is placed in the bright pink area of the sky to seemingly light the beacon.   Posted: 04/02/2026 23:03:41

Michael, For me the colors are what stand out in this photo. What's interesting to me is that the colors of the sky are dramatic but the sky is soft, allowing for the lighthouse to stand out and be seen since it is sharp and has the nice red to draw your eye. The leading line helps as well to draw our attention to it, of course. I also appreciate the turn that happens on the left so that it isn't just a straight line to the lighthouse.   Posted: 04/05/2026 12:50:28

Hi Michael. Very chilly looking image! The catwalk leads my eye to nicely toward the lighthouse, and the cool tones enhance that crisp, cold feeling. The seabirds add a nice accent to the scene. I do notice a dip in the catwalk - was it caused by the strong winds or is it part of the design? The horizon seems to be wavy behind it but that could be from the strong wind gusts or just my eye playing tricks on me.   Posted: 04/07/2026 13:58:29

Just a gorgeous sky! I love the leading of the catwalk to the lighthouse. The lighthouse with its red roof contrasts nicely with the rest of the scene. I also noticed the wavey horizon that Barbara mentioned, right in front of the dip in the catwalk. Any idea what that is. If its a wave, it would be monstrous!   Posted: 04/08/2026 20:06:51

The kink in the catwalk is because the elevation of the walkway changes near the lighthouse. What appears to be a wave is just ice. Most of the shoreline is covered with ice shoves, but the wind covered them with sand so it appears to be part of the sandy beach.

Michael - many ways to skin a cat … but for this image, I wouldn't change a thing. Love it - just as it is. It's dramatic, historic, and atmospheric. Nice work!   Posted: 04/10/2026 02:33:29

I recall you posted a similar picture in the past. The lighthouse on the third line from the right is the perfect alignment of the composition. The birds give the atmosphere and the "sound of the sea". This is well executed.
