About the Image(s)

This was a shot I didn’t have time to stop for many years ago and always intended to go back to shoot. The light was late day, dimly overcast ??“ not good. But it added a solemn air to this place of reverence.
I cropped it as low as I could without losing the flagpole (very important to the overall statement). I lifted shadows and overall exposure, added dehaze, texture clarity & contrast to make the otherwise washed-out stones stand out.

I agreed that the monochrome looks gone used for the image as it brings out a stark feeling. Still the precision of a Military cemetery does look good in color. Kind of a maker's choice. At least for me I feel you should hav taken another step to the left so there would be some space for that flag pole. Pinned so close to the left edge it sort of looks like a mistake. I also would be happier if the tree on the right were not included. The massive trunk becomes overpowering. Did you think about using a lower camera position?   Posted: 04/17/2025 18:37:23

After I looked at your image and Larry's comments, I would agree with his comments except maybe lowering the camera. I know military graveyards are harder to photograph well than one would think, and to get the lines with some separation of tombstones, I think your camera position was ok. I also like the choice of B/W. It keeps the eye focused on the tombstones.

Hi Grace. Before reading your description, the flag and tree trunk felt a bit out of place for me. I agree that the flag plays an important role in the story, but I wish it had a little more breathing room from the edge of the frame. For me, the tree trunk doesn't add to the story so I would suggest removing it. I appreciate both b/w and color versions.   Posted: 04/18/2025 14:47:40

Grace, I personally like the monochrome version. The flag is an important aspect of the composition. I would have cropped the photo by .5 inch from the left.   Posted: 04/19/2025 21:10:52
