About the Image(s)
In October last year, a friend and I traveled to Southern West Virginia hoping to capture some fall colors. On our first night of the trip we went out with hopes to photograph a sunset/moonrise by Plum Orchard Lake. Unfortunately, the weather had different plans, presenting us with gloomy, heavily clouded skies instead. As a result, we turned our focus on the dramatic cloud cover as the light turned from day to dusk. The image was edited in Lightroom utilizing masks for local editing.

I can see a beautiful symmetry of trees showing fall colors, which I truly liked. I also liked the reflection of leaves on the water.   Posted: 01/12/2025 15:10:41

Hi Barbara
As you know, I'm a sucker for this type of moody day photo. I love the light, and the rich feel of the colors. The cool blue-grey tones really make for an inviting image. The non-peak fall colors and the inclusion of the floating leaves that also show fall color adds demonstrates use of the design principle of repetition. The boat is is lovely extension of the line of the pier. I find it interesting how you have included sharp rising diagonal lines and also included some interesting cures to soften the mood.
I'm glad you didn't get your sunset---this is soo much better.
I'll pretend I didn't notice those harsh hard rocks in the lower right corner. They really aren't there are they? :-)   Posted: 01/12/2025 16:41:28

This image is an eye feast. The lily pads lead to the docks which lead out to the platform and then the reflections bring me back to the lily pads. I love the moody palette and reflections of the sky in the water. I agree with Larry that the rocks have to go.   Posted: 01/12/2025 17:58:48

I love this painterly style. In particular, you have not fallen for the temptation to boost the autumn colours but keep them in a pastel style. The slight fog adds to the mystery mood. The only pick as Larry already has mentioned, is to crop out the rocks at the bottom.   Posted: 01/19/2025 07:37:49

I think you did very well for a gloomy day. The brighter cloud catches the viewers eye in a focal point and the colors are great.
