Basilica di San Francesco by Michael Jack, QPSA

January 2025 - Basilica di San Francesco

About the Image(s)

This image was taken on a trip to Italy this past September. We had a day in Siene and had a long walk back to our bus from city center. Along the road back was a good view of the Basilica di San Francesco.

The first thing that strikes me concerning this image is that it feels like a painting that should be on the wall of an Italian dining establishment (pass the pasta please). I like the leading line of the curved street and its compliment, the curved line on the wall on the right side of the image.

I would suggest several crops to clean up what I see as distractions. I don't like the bright shutters on the left edge, nor the little bit of clutter on the road at the bottom edge and also the area to right right of the pipe on the right edge. My crop suggestions may be seen in the attached image. Just my 2 cents worth.   Posted: 01/05/2025 14:55:28

I think you are spot on now that I am looking at my image versus your crop.   Posted: 01/05/2025 16:56:47

While I agree with Larry, I liked the shades of cloud.
Michael, did you do any edits of the cloud?   Posted: 01/12/2025 15:17:44

I was in Siene many years ago and plan to go there again in April. To me, it is one of the most picturesque cities in Italy. You have captured this scene well, with the warm brick stone colour contrasting with the blue sky and the leading lines into the basilica. I agree with Larry`s crop that makes the image cleaner.   Posted: 01/19/2025 07:28:09

Hi Michael. The road and the wall to the right (with the black line) draw me into the image. The vibrant colors, textures of the buildings, and interesting roof tiles keep my attention. The city's architecture and craftsmanship is beautiful. Nice capture.   Posted: 01/19/2025 16:08:30

Michael, each and every side (4) of this picture is a stand alone and a good picture by itself. Putting them all together all in hyper focal distance makes my eye run around looking for the subject. Mind as well they are all of the same colors.
I think Larry was making the same point of many options of good crops.   Posted: 01/20/2025 23:22:40
