About the Image(s)

I started with the landscape photos and combined them because I wanted the texture of the grass but the color of the water and misty mountains. I used Subtract Blend Mode for the grass layer, placed over the blue water layer. A motion blur filter was applied to the grass layer. I used Filter Gallery > Render > Tree to create the aspen trees; I then converted them to silhouettes using the Brightness/Contrast and Shadows/Highlights image adjustment menus. Next, I added a new empty layer between the background layers and the tree layers and used a white soft paintbrush to create a bright moon that appeared as a halo under the trees. I also painted a moon highlight to the ground at reduced opacity. Another empty layer was added for the tree shadows; I just brushed them by hand since they were basically just straight lines. My original intent was to keep the image very minimal with just a slight hint of spookiness for Halloween, but my husband thought it was too simple, so I added the little girl, ghost, and spider to amp it up. I then just used a large, soft black brush at reduced opacity to darken the upper and lower edges of the image. Lastly, I used On1 to add a slight glow filter.

As usual I am just amazed at your imagination!!
I agree with your husband that putting in the little girl, ghost and spider adds to the spookiness of the image.
Well done.   Posted: 10/01/2026 15:19:04

This is another wonderful image. Personally, and you've heard this from me before, "less is more." All you need is the girl. The ghost and the spider draw attention away from her. I initially stopped by to congratulate you on PSA Journal's publication of your work and background. "Portal" is one of my favorites, and "The Path of Time" is vintage Handman. Keep your creative juices flowing as I look forward to a published book of your works.   Posted: 10/02/2026 13:41:22

Hi Alan. I agree with you that having just the girl would work best to add some tension, but keep it minimal as well. Thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement about my photos and the Journal article! Much appreciated.

Really love this! The blue tones give the whole composite such a wonderfully eerie, atmospheric feel, and the elements blend together really naturally. The lighting and mood are especially strong. The composition is beautifully done. Such a creative composite-really enjoyed looking at this! Great Halloween image! The spider and the little girl tell the story, without them I do not think the image would have an impact.   Posted: 10/03/2026 02:24:09

Hi Jan,
Another masterpiece! I love the blues and the shadows are perfect. at first I loved the ghost and spider, but after reading the other comments, I do wonder how it would look with just the girl, no ghost or spider.   Posted: 10/05/2026 00:21:54

Thanks Sylvia. Yes, I think I'm landing in the same camp as you and Alan. The little girl adds needed tension, but the spider and ghost kind of clutter it up.   Posted: 10/09/2026 21:49:51

Hi Jan, I could have lived with just the girl, but I know you would have eventually added birds too.

Especially as envisioned by Hitchcock. They scared the socks off me. Stay cool.   Posted: 10/09/2026 22:08:03

I mostly love the proportions you've chosen, except for the ghoul. To my eye, it should be larger, lower, and a bit darker.   Posted: 10/09/2026 03:45:00

Thanks Steve. I think I've pretty much decided the spider and ghost should be eliminated, but your suggestion might make it work.   Posted: 10/09/2026 21:54:22
