About the Image(s)

The tree in Original 1 is common in our neighborhood and I’ve always thought the leaves look like butterfly wings. So, I finally decided to explore expanding on that idea to make a butterfly using only plant materials for something kind of corny this month.

I used the distort tool in PS to tweak the leaf to get closer to an actual wing. I duplicated the succulent petal a couple times and stacked them on top of each other to make the abdomen, and then shaped the head. Next, I added the eyes and antennae using berries and twigs. I looked at a lot of butterfly photos to figure out what features to use to decorate the wings and then what plants and flowers would work. I worked on only one wing so I could just duplicate it and flip it horizontally for the second one. A lot of struggle was involved trying to get the look I wanted with only plants and it never quite came together, so I ended up deciding to add the black details by painting them in.

Once I had the basic composition, I used PS poster edges and oil paint filters. Then into Nik Color Efex to add grain texture and glow. Lastly, I added the green border.

WOW - what a great job of compositing. Great composition, colours and tones. Making the leaves into wings shows your skills in this piece. For me, I would like to see a bit more pop - see my attempt, using Ps Curves tool.   Posted: 03/05/2025 13:32:29

A very different type of image from your normal creations, but a very enjoyable one with some super construction. The butterflies in our garden have just started emerging, and I will watch out for this one!   Posted: 03/10/2025 05:39:25

Hi Jan. I agree with Mike comments. I love to see you try something different. It's not your default. To me. It is perfectly done. I do not mind Gunter curve adjustment to make it more pop. The whole arrangement is just a perfect prove. An excellent combination between art and photo editing skills. Good Job Jan. I love it!   Posted: 03/16/2025 20:38:35

Beautiful work, Jan. One needs to look twice to realize that is not a real butterfly. I love the way you put this together.   Posted: 03/25/2025 21:32:39
