About the Image(s)

The image this month is a leaf with a texture added then worked in different blend modes. The leaf was layered with the wood/tree texture on top in Exclusion mode at 100% opacity to give original 2. The leaf was layered with the wood/tree texture on top in Darken mode at 92% opacity to give original 3. The leaf file was larger than the texture file and when layered the frame resulted. Then the Darken file was layered on top of the Exclusion file at 82% opacity . Then the Darken file was added on top again at 78% opacity. Next, the edited texture raw file was added at 21% opacity. The background around the leaf was masked of at varying opacities in each step. Then a grey on white texture was added to tie the leaf and background together, and finally the frame was cropped.

You have managed to fill the holes in the leaf well, and the result is a good creative still life image. I like the new background, but I wonder if it would benefit from being a slightly brighter colour?   Posted: 02/03/2025 09:27:08

While I can't make a more technical comment about layering due to my inexperience with different modes of layering and other tools in Photoshop (I will be working on this!) I do like the leaf - combining its structure with the interesting overlay of the wood. I would have liked to have seen how the background might have worked in different colors - in particular the blues which seemed inconsistent with the earthiness of the leaf.   Posted: 02/04/2025 17:14:39

Hi Peter. I agree with your suggestion. This would make the leaf with it's strong texture look more outstanding.   Posted: 02/16/2025 08:05:21

As you know, I really enjoy experimenting with blend modes, so this appeals to me. It's sort of a study in textures, and I like your end result. Using two images of such similar colors gives much different (more subtle) results than using images with dissimilar colors and shapes (especially in Difference mode). Did you enjoy the process of seeing how the various blend modes affected the results?   Posted: 02/05/2025 18:33:28

An interesting image. As always, well constructed. No suggestions.   Posted: 02/14/2025 17:33:41

Hi Candy. I like how you combine the leaf with the wood texture. To me, you are really master of the PS blend mode. I prefer the 'woody mood' as in original 3. Otherwise, please review my comments to Peter Katz.   Posted: 02/16/2025 08:03:16
