About the Image(s)
I enjoy all kinds of photography, but street photography is probably my favorite.
I travel is Mexico a lot, and Guanajuato, a colonial city in the center of the country, is one of my favorite places. I love to stay right in the historic center. This photo is set in the Jardin which is essentially the city center. At night it is full of activity, but early in the morning it’s peaceful. I get a cup of coffee from the OXXO and a bun from Doris who has a pop-up panaderia in the next plaza, sit on a bench and imagine myself in the 16th century.
Each morning a guy comes around to sweep with a palm frond. When he gets to me, I have to lift my legs to he can get under. One day this dog appeared and wanted to play with the frond. The sweeper played along and it was so fun to watch.
I took this with my tiny Sony Rx1RII which has a fixed 35mm lens, f3.5, 1/80 of a second, ISO 200.

I wondered whether the man and dog could have an even stronger presence with a little less competing for our attention. The bright awning and blue sign catch my eye, and the large tree and open area give the scene more space than this intimate moment may need. In my version, I cropped closer, softened or eliminated some of those bright elements, and tried flipping the image to see how the action would read from left to right. The flip is very much a matter of personal taste, but I hope the version helps show what I mean. The playful exchange you captured is what makes the photograph work.

I really like your capture-it has such a great sense of story and feels very much like a genuine street moment. There's something about the man, the broom, the dog and the tree canopy that really caught my attention.
I thought I'd play around with it in B&W just to see how it might feel. I like the slightly edgier mood it gives the image, and I think it helps take some of the attention away from the shade. To my eye, it also makes the motion blur of his broom moving through the canopy feel a little cleaner and less muddy.
Of course, your original has its own character, and this is just another way of seeing the moment you captured. I always enjoy seeing how an image can take on a different personality with a simple change like this.   Posted: 10/06/2026 22:06:07
